The Golden Gate Bridge has been connecting marin and the north bay to San Francisco for 75 years – build with determination, engineering prowess and state of the art (for the time) building techniques. It has withstood earthquakes, politics and the pacific – here is to another 75 years!
On September 23, 2008, Dorothy, a female chimpanzee in her late 40s, died of congestive heart failure. A maternal and beloved figure, Dorothy spent eight years at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, which houses and rehabilitates chimps victimized by habitat loss and the illegal African bushmeat trade.
After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years, she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000, Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group’s alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee.
Szczupider, who had been a volunteer at the center, told me: “Her presence, and loss, was palpable, and resonated throughout the group. The management at Sanaga-Yong opted to let Dorothy’s chimpanzee family witness her burial, so that perhaps they would understand, in their own capacity, that Dorothy would not return. Some chimps displayed aggression while others barked in frustration, but perhaps the most stunning reaction was a recurring, almost tangible silence. If one knows chimpanzees, then one knows that [they] are not [usually] silent creatures.”

If you’re like me, you dread injections – regardless of how good or necessary they might be. The combination of anticipation, pain and equipment used, instantly brings me to a cold sweat but it looks like my days of fearing injections are closely coming to an end. Smart people at MIT have created a prototype device that may soon end the use of needles for injecting all kinds of medicines into the human body – that said, I still have no idea why they made it look like a gun… Video after the break.

9To5 Mac has posted supposed leaked images of Apple’s next-gen iPhone (back side). The images confirm long running rumors of a larger physical design, smaller dock connector, moved earphone jack (bottom corner) and larger speaker grill. The design looks more refined – more modern and more in-line with Apple’s unibody (metal) macbook line. More info coming….

The Atlantic has a great piece on legendary photographer Timothy O’Sullivan and some amazing pictures from America’s “Wild West.” The Pictures were taken about 150 years ago by O’Sullivan but their emotion and abrasiveness still stun to this day. This was America’s last great frontier….that was explored (for good and for bad). We’re still exploring the seas of this blue planet and we’re still somewhat (half-heartedly) poking at the heavens but the drive we once had, has all but faded away.

GAPA/BS is the Baixada Santista’s AIDS Prevention Support Group. Baixada Santista is where the main port in Brazil and in Latin America is located, the Port of Santos. These are just the first steps of a really cool project to fight AIDS that we launched in Brazil. It is the BE PURE project. A nice project that put together more than 10 artist from all around the world like Gary Baseman, Alberto Cerriteño and Niark1, to bring back purity on everybody.
What do you do with one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time – you remake it but with a little more style…..with lots and lots of toys.
I’m not a huge fan of Apple’s celebrity siri ads but the two newest commercials featuring the ever cheery John Malkovich are more tolerable than the previous ads. Move over Samuel L Jackson and Zooey Deschanel!

Google is know for messing around with their home page, often placing pictures in celebration of something/someone or little snippets of code, like the Moog Doodle pictured above. The best part about the Google Moog doodle is that it’s an actual working synthesizer and wouldn’t you know it, Brett Domino took full advantage by covering Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic – oh how I love you internet!

With the closing of Google’s acquisition of Motorola, we can finally say R.I.P. to Moto. The smart money says that Google’s takeover of Moto was mostly patent related and massive layoffs are just around the corner for employees of Motorola. Google has said that they’ll run Motorola at arms length but it’s unlikely that they’ll compete with partnering OEMs like Samsung and HTC – in terms of handsets.
While highly unlikely, Isaac Royo’s iPhone 5 concept is interesting and while many might love the 360 speaker grill – I think Mr. Ive might not be down with it and Steve would have said: ” Isaac, you blew it!”
While there are many movie genres and even more sub-genres, few mashups come close to the brilliance of combining zombie/horror + western. One exception is the 1973 classic Westworld, which combined western and terror/horror.
So my career as a virtuoso bassist hasn’t quite panned out… but luckliy i can now make films for virtuoso basists. This piece was a blast to put together. Animated zombie western, what’s not to love? Big ups to Les and ATO for letting me run wild with this one…
