During today’s Apple investor conference call, C.E.O. Tim Cook was quoted as saying that Apple set: “a new single-day record” for iPad sales/activations but no specific numbers were released. Hours later, GSM carrier AT&T released this statment:
On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people.
Again, no specifics but if they beat iPad 1 or iPad 2 single day records, we’re looking at numbers between 500,000 to 1.3 million units (small window, I know). Additionally, from what we’ve heard, the New iPad is still available for in-store pickup and from third party vendors like Walmart – so no long lines for people still wanting one, even though online order shipments have slipped to 2-3 weeks. No word from Verizon on the issue but it’s still early in the day.

Why don’t we slowly start moving the military/armed forces over to Nasa (including the budget $$) – re-train military personal for space missions, astronauts, scientists and engineers. We know the capability of our military and the strength of their fortitude – when given a mission, they complete it without fail. It is when they are given an unjust mission or not a mission at all (babysitting unstable governments), that our sons and daughters begin to crumble.
Apple has issued a press release and Tim Cook (C.E.O.) is taking a conference call this morning, announcing that Apple will start paying its stock holders a dividend of $2.65/share (starting in fiscal Q4) and a stock buy back program that will go into effect sometime in September 2012. The long running joke was that Apple’s cash wasn’t burning a hole in its pockets but over the last 2-3 years, investors started making noise about possible dividends – afterall, Apple has been sitting on close to $100 Billion in cash/short term assets.
We have used some of our cash to make great investments in our business through increased research and development, acquisitions, new retail store openings, strategic prepayments and capital expenditures in our supply chain, and building out our infrastructure. You’ll see more of all of these in the future,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Even with these investments, we can maintain a war chest for strategic opportunities and have plenty of cash to run our business. So we are going to initiate a dividend and share repurchase program…

Over the last 3 months, Apple has been getting hit hard by articles and news stories accusing the iPhone/iPad maker of horride working conditions, specifically in its Chinese factories. The New York Times wrote several stories covering the supposed grievances, we wrote about it here and you can find the Times article here. Yet, the NYT wasn’t the only organization jumping on Apple over worker treatment, others were quick to point the finger at Apple (90% were hit pieces) and one of the loudest was the much beloved podcast: This American Life.
Back in January, This American Life ran a story, with the help of Mike Daisey’s, over the treatment of Apple factory workers in China and possible child labor practices. The piece was hard hitting, very animated (with the help of Mr. Daisey’s theatrical training) and explosive. It was another nail in the coffin for Apple’s continuing PR nightmare but Tim Cook (CEO Apple) didn’t take the accusations lightly, reiterating Apple’s stance on worker conditions:
We think the use of underaged labor is abhorrent. It’s extremely rare in our supply chain, but our top priority is to eliminate it totally. We’ve done that with our final assembly and we’re now working with vendors farther down in the supply chain. If we find a supplier that intentionally hires underage labor, it’s a firing offense….

On March 15, 2012, Austria’s Felix Baumgartner jumped out of a space capsule from an altitude of approximately 71,580 feet as the Red Bull Stratos project moved forward into the manned flight stage in New Mexico. The 42-year-old rode the space capsule attached to a giant helium balloon above the so-called “Armstrong Line.” The goal of the Red Bull Stratos project is to see Baumgartner attempt a record-breaking freefall from 120,000 feet this summer where he’ll potentially become the first man to go supersonic without the support of a vehicle…
