While internet traffic in and out of Egypt has been severly restricted by the government over the last week, starting last Friday, everything but the stock exchange and some other key commerce sectors were down – now Hosni Mubarak’s dying government has completely cut off all internet traffic in and out of Egypt. No state or private ISP’s are working, no private link for the stock exchange or health services - nothing. While line and mobile communication are still sporadic, the complete blackout of internet services means a complete closure of Egypt’s economy – in a matter of seconds, Egypt disappeared from the internet’s global existence.
Yet, where there’s hope, there’s ingenuity and the blackout hasn’t stopped protesters from communicating with ham radios, dial up internet modems and landline calls to pass along tweets. Breaking or cutting infrastructure hasn’t broken the protester’s spirits – its just made them more driven. Hosni Mubarak, time’s up buddy – Exit stage right! NEXT!!
