As a kid, I loved the endless fun a simple remote control car would provide….I still do but cars are old-school compared to the aerial toys kids get to pick from today. From Toys R Us to Amazon, the general public has an infinite drone choice but what seems like an advancement in toys could actually be a coming civil liberties fight.
Leica cameras have been making the news of late, with an original 1923 0-series selling yesterday for $2.8 Million but since most of us don’t have that kind of cash, let’s just watch this video of technicians making the limited edition Leica M9-P Hermès.
There is nothing I want more in the world than a diverse and healthy mobile hardware environment (competition spurs innovation) but it pains me to see so much buzz around Blackberry 10′s new camera app. If the camera app is the most interesting things to come out of Blackberry world this week, I see no future for RIMM, as this was their final chance to make a splash in the mobile space.
An award-winning street photographer who has been creating memorable images in the great photojournalistic tradition since 1962, Joel Meyerowitz pioneered the use of color in this slice of life genre, and his classic book on Cape Cod, “Cape Light” was instrumental in changing the prevailing dismissive attitudes toward color photography. Within a few days of the 9/11 attacks on The World Trade Center, Meyerowitz began to create an archive of the destruction and recovery at Ground Zero that consists of over 8,000 images of the aftermath of the tragedy. In this latest Leica Portrait video, Joel shares the story of his transition from junior art director to legendary photographer…
Wether this concept would do well in real life, especially with professional photographers, is up in the air - as a concept, I found it intriguing but the lens is overkill. There is no practical way to explain a lens that large of such a structurally thin body – it took the concept from reality to comedic.

April Fools has come and gone – everyone can breath easy again but i have to admit, I fell for the RH-1 gag big time. The below video showed up on Vimeo a couple of days before April 1st, so I thought it might be safe but apparently the rules have changed. Regardless, when I first saw it, I was captivated and quickly bookmarked the video. The only real problem was that I couldn’t find a single seller and i didn’t want to write a blog post about it without more info or at least pricing. That was a life saver…. Enjoy the video.
An unexpected side-effect of the 2010 flooding in parts of Sindh, Pakistan, was that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters; because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water took so long to recede, many trees became cocooned in spiders webs. People in the area had never seen this phenomenon before, but they also reported that there were less mosquitos than they would have expected, given the amount of standing water that was left. Not being bitten by mosquitoes was one small blessing for people that had lost everything in the floods. (© Russell Watkins)

Photography is great but sometimes reality isn’t as wonderful as our imaginations. Creating new art forms or simply combining multiple art forms isn’t easy but when someone does manage to do it – the results are magical. Here are some “Photodrawings” from Ben Heine.

DSLRs are great and offer a wide range of features, including HD video recording but they tend to be bulky and not so easy to carry around with ease. With the rise of smartphone ownership, small point and shot cameras have almost become obsolete….almost. Yet, even the iphone 4S’s camera, which is widely considered the best smartphone camera, can’t match the quality/specs/features a good portable micro four thirds can – hence the Canon S100.
Being able to easily carry around a very good quaily camera is still a must for many people and Canon’s Powershot S100 is the perfect mixture of compact body, amazing picture quality, stunning HD video recording and design. Essentially, it’s the next evolutionary step to Canon’s super popular S95, so it’s good to see Canon improving on the already great foundations of their past hardware. So what do we get with the S100:
While smartphones and their ever advancing cameras will eventually take over the portable camera market, there are people which still need a full featured micro four thirds when they’re on the go. Canon’s S100 is, in terms of features, design and picture quality, the top compact camera on the market. Its one drawback is pricing and at $419 (amazon) you’re starting to get into entry level DSLR pricing. That said, the S100 is offering form factor and for many people, design is worth the extra cost.

For all of you out there that have always wanted an iPod Nano w/ camera, you might just get it! The above images appeared on Apple blogging site, Apple.pro and detail what appears to be a iPod Nano with a back side camera. Rumors from last year claimed that Apple was working on a camera equipped Nano but last September, at Apple’s yearly iPod event, nothing was released. While no additional information was released or leaked, it would be interesting to see what Apple does with the Nano line of hardware – a camera would somewhat spice up the dull mini mp3 player player.

“The compact nature of the D-Lux 4 means it can be with you all the time. But despite its compact size, it offers top Leica quality and gives the photographer plenty of artistic freedom. The D-Lux 4 is ideal, whether for subjects composed with lots of forethought or for spontaneous reportage…”

The GoPro Hero HD and it’s newer brother, the HD Hero 2 are by far the best all purpose cameras for filming any kind of activity out-doors – period! With a countless number of accessories and housings (including water proof and 3D kits) the versatility of this camera and company is truly endless – as an owner, I can vouch. Check it out for yourself - click here.
Like our previous article covering the transformation of Black/white images to color, this collection of autochrome photography by Albert Kahn is a truly stunning collection – both in terms of size (he was able to amass a collection of 180,000 metres of b/w film and more than 72,000 autochrome plates, the first industrial process for true colour photography) and imagery. See the whole collection here – Click & Enjoy.

We all love the Go Pro. It’s by far the best HD camera for life’s adventurous activities, especially for sports involving water or tons of shaking. The Go Pro’s HD quality is surprisingly good and with a wide variety of accessories, it stands atop its second hand competitors. So, if you love being active and love taking video of yourself but always hated that 2D effect – this is the expansion accessory for you.
“The 3D HERO System allows you to combine two 1080p HD HERO cameras into a single housing to record 3D video and photos while simultaneously recording in 2D. A synchronization cable plugs into the rear HERO Port on both cameras to join them together, enabling both cameras to record video and photos in perfect synchronization. This is a requirement for professional quality 3D and is available only from GoPro.”
There you go, $99 green backs and water proof up to 180ft – ships within 24hours. I hate 3D but video of life’s adventures might just convert me - have a look for yourself.

Find yourself complaining about your camera’s megapixel deficiency? Well, skip over this story, as it will make you crap your pants!
The Place: Czech Republic - specifically the reading room of the super old and private Strahov monastery.
The Culprit: Jeffrey Martin and his bionic robotic GigaPanBot: “The GigaPanBot is an automatic rotating pan and tilt head designed to rotate and trigger a digital DSLR camera. It can be used in combination with fish eye lenses to shoot fast 360° panoramas or with tele lenses up to 600mm to shoot multi-row…”
The Outcome: A massive 40 GigaPixel – 360 Degree – 283 GB Panoramic Digital Image! Yea, I said 283 GB image! The finished images was stitched together from about 2,947 separate shots, taking a computer a little over 4 days to complete. Sweet jesus! Now that a new record is set, some one better start daisy-chaining those GigaPanBot cameras together, for a single 360 degree shot of New York…..from the Empire State Building. Just Looked over at my Canon T2i……it just shed a tear…..

This last Friday marked the first day Apple’s iPad 2 became available and four days into Jobs “third post-pc era”, we’re beginning to get some user reviews. From comments I’ve read across the blog-o-sphere, people seem to be very satisfied with the overall speed, thinness and graphics performance but one thing or should I say, “two things,” people are getting worked up about are the cameras. That’s right, Jobs & Co have placed two extremely low quality cameras (front/back) in their next gen tablet.
How bad are these cameras? Well, so bad that Apple didn’t even make mention about their specs at the iPad 2′s unveiling, nor can you find anything on Apple’s website. The chatter we’ve heard goes like this: The back side camera is upscaling 720p (like the 4th gen ipod touch) and the front facing camera (you know, the one meant for facetime) is less than 1 megapixel. If you want to sell us the full package Apple, go the distance – we don’t like foreplay.
What kind of camera do you get for $58,000 – The handmade Red Epic-M Digital Cinema Camera!
“…I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today…”
Irina Werning’s time traversing photo project is simply put, stunning. How much we change and how much we stay the same always amazes me – especially with photography being the medium. Irina’s full project can be found at her site – Click Here.
So a couple days after Thanksgiving, I visited Amazon.com because I’ve been in the market for a new DSLR and found the Canon EOS Rebel T2i on sale for $749. I’d been eyeing the older T1i but when I looked over the T2i’s features, I was sold!
I’ve only had it for a couple weeks and while I’ve made an effort to use it everyday, I’m still learning all the features. The shutter speed is amazingly fast and the Full HD movie mode is both stunning and crystal clear. The 3inch LCD display is perfect for previewing your newly taken shots and the firm/stable body feels great in the hand. Additionally, the great low light level performance, SDXC support, Battery life and amazing natural color quality make my first impressions of this camera and big thumbs up. Obviously, I’ll update this post in the near future with pictures and video but so far, I’m very happy – especially since I got it at such a great price.

Bigfoot – Nessie – Crop Circles – Bermuda Triangle – Aliens…..well, everyone really believes in aliens. Anyway, the mythical beast of a camera is finally shipping and it looks like Mark Pederson from OffHollywood, is the first one to get it. Congrats Mark! I will not be getting my tiny hands on this mystical monster anytime soon, as I don’t have $58,000 burning a hole in my pocket.

Update: The above mentioned camera was stolen from Mark Pederson house, while him and his family were sleeping.
